The reason why Barragán si Mexico’s best architect, is because, while Gonzalez de Leon looked at international trends like brutalism and tried to elevate Mayan revival with it, Barragán saw classical colonial architecture and blew it up to the point of surrealism, the pasticity of the materials and their colors goes into some sort of hyper Mexican colonialism, if walking through downtown in any Mexican city is like chewing on a piece of colonial architecture bubblegum and walking in downtown San Miguel de Allende or San Cristóbal de las Casas is shoving the whole pack on your mouth, Barragán’s pieces are like drowning in an absurdly big tub of liquid colonial architectural bubblegum, he exploited Mexico’s mexicanness using architecture
