I’m going to be the apparent minority here but I absolutely love this. It’s very spartan in all of the regular images but the potential that those stairs and roof space offer for plants and such is amazing. It wouldn’t be hard to turn this into something a little more cozy and organic.

I’m sure this is gonna be the unpopular opinion, but I think it’s great! Yes it may not be to many people’s taste, and it certainly isn’t as cosy as I would like my house to be, but conceptually it’s fantastic. Taking the main circulation of a typical house and exaggerating it to create links between the "rooms" the sky and the wider context.
Perhaps a little inelegant and ofc slightly impractical.

Tokyo has a lot of very unique houses. Japan has very high taxes on property being passed down from parents to descendents and also has maximum age restrictions on many types of buildings because of earthquakes. The result is that houses are usually torn down after the original occupants die and then the lot is divided up (oftentimes into really weird shapes and sizes).
After that new owners of these new smaller lots will get their own unique houses designed by architects with an extreme amount of care and then built by with an equal amount of care (the Japanese construction industry is regarded as one of it not the best in the world in terms of quality).
So you get a lot of very unique houses designed not for resale value a decade down the road but for the very specific tastes and needs of the occupants who may live there for the rest of their lives. So say what you will about you not personally liking it, it doesn’t really matter because someone like you liking it was never a consideration of the design process. I am sure the actual occupants are very happy with it.

I honestly can’t stand it. It is too form over function, and I get that it’s supposed to be a piece of art, but it’s supposed to be a house first.
This is the type of project you can only get away with designing once you own a design firm.
