Building a 12’x16’ cabin while I have the time. Thankful for lumber delivery. More photos with progress to come.

Good on you mate! Could you please share your plans? Looking to build one myself in the near future.

    Curious
    Why the double rim joists?
    Is that common?
    And no hoist hangers?

    Looks drafty

Good idea in theory. In practice it means a lot of trips to the hardware store.

Are those 8x or 10x? The span looks a bit long for 8x. Also, while you have access, dig out a few more inches underneath so you can crawl under to install insulation and bottom cover (for rodents).

I have built a mouse house or two πŸ™

I look forward to watching your progress. That’s some serious joist blocking, I only did one row down the middle. And what’s with the double rim joists? I only put on a single layer; am I going to have to tear it down and start over? πŸ˜‰

Looks like you have power. Is this just on some property where you have an existing house or is it off grid somewhere?

I don’t want to be ‘that’ guy but have you calculated the deflection of your joists? They look to be 2×8’s and the kind of span you have side to side is beyond it’s capabilities I’m pretty sure but haven’t look at a span table. I could easily see you adding another beam down the centre to avoid any kind of bowing. If you’ve done the math, I apologize but have a look before getting in too far. Looks great though!

Are you in the US? Is permitting and codes a concern? I’m always so curious how people just build stuff like this without red tape, because even if you decide not to file permits, don’t you risk forced destruction in the future?
