On a hilltop, near Reykjavík, the Hallgrímskirkja is one of the city’s best-known landmarks and is visible throughout the city. Architect Guðjón Samúelsson’s design of the church was commissioned in 1937. He is said to have designed it to resemble the trap rocks, mountains and glaciers of Iceland.
New York Coliseum, an office building and convention centre opened in 1956. The brainchild of Robert Moses who cleared the area of “slums”, it was never popular and was demolished in 2000 for the Time Warner Center after years of debate on what would take its place
