Wych Street in London, much of which was from the Elizabethan period, was demolished entirely as part of a redevelopment plan in 1901.

  1. I’m still playing Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (which tbf I came to very late) just so I can run around London and look at the amazing architecture from around 50 years before this photo.

    I’m now going to have to find this one 🙂

  2. The Elizabethan period was November 17, 1558 – March 24, 1603 (according to google)… it’s fascinating to think buildings that old were still being used regularly just 120 years ago. (Yeah I’m American, I know England has much older buildings than that!)

  3. While the Victoria era gave us many a gorgeous building, I do wish more effort had been made to preserve heritage buildings such as these. Equally I know that Nazi bombers would have made quick work of these within 40 years of their demolition anyway. Sadly, something of a lost cause.

  4. Pretty and characterful, but probably a massive health hazard for the people who lived inside. Australia House and the neighbouring buildings are pretty cool anyway.

  5. I believe this street used to be where Aldwych is now located. Although to be fair, the "new" buildings done in Baroque architecture are good replacements.

  6. I am so thankful, that people photographed all those lost buildings. That’s a real treasure.
