The building of the War Museum of Crete was built in Chania in 1870 as a barracks. It was converted into a museum after WW2 and housed historical relics and photographic material related to the participation of Cretans in the Macedonian Struggle (1903 – 1922), the Balkan Wars (1912 – 13), the Asia Minor Campaign (1919 – 1922), the First (1914 – 1918) and Second World Wars and during the Occupation (1941 – 45).
It was in the process of being renovated when it was destroyed by fire on 22 July 2018.
