    It even looks like one of those RPG villages where you wonder how a "town" of six or eight buildings can have a wall and gates.

    It probably was set up to protect the villagers and the people living nearby in farms. I know in Germany some farmers paid a tax to be allowed to flee to the castle/fortified town in case of an army attacking.
