Two newly scanned typical intersections in Los Angeles in 1902 reveals the european style of the city at the time. Nearly every structure you see was demolished in the 1930s and later 1960s including the railway.

Just wow. If this was in Europe, it would have been flooded with tourists. The city would probably also be pretty rich due to tourist money! Wasted opportunity.

Edit: Yes I get it, they get many tourists already.

How is it that Americans were able to so thoroughly destroy their cities when not a single bomb had hit them? The sheer scale of what was lost astounds me. How can an entire city be replaced in a couple decades? Modern Los Angeles has zero resemblance to this old photos.

These are all downtown and no one goes there unless they work in finance or need to see their lawyer or run a homeless shelter

Would have visited Los Angeles, if it would still look that beautiful. So sad.

What is the source of these photographs OP?

Where did you get these from? I want to know what intersections they are. These images do not match the character of the city I’m familiar with from that time period.

Living in LA and seeing images like this breaks my heart. There are so many days where the weather is perfect and sunny but everyone is sitting in traffic in their climate controlled boxes.

Often I walk outside and it feels just like northern Italy.

To be in a walkable, vibrant, urban city in this same climate….it would be heaven.
