Thread Head Castle in Co. Cork, Ireland — a small single-wall castle that protected locals with a huge cliff to the south, and a fortified lake to the north, and a walled keep connecting them
The castle was designed to protect the local clan from invaders to the east (from the point the picture is taken). Off the left of the image is a [HUGE sheer cliff](https://i.imgur.com/1wrsBCe.jpg), inaccessible. To the right [is a lake](https://i.imgur.com/QzFmfVn.jpg) that fed into the ocean, with fortified edges on places to make boat landings difficult. Behind the castle, over that hill, it goes straight into the Atlantic at a very steep angle, inaccessible.
The keeps also housed soldiers that kept a watch as the hill behind provided a good vantage point for the surrounding peninsulas to watch for invaders and merchant ships.

EDIT: I goofed in the title, it’s actually “**Three Castle Head**” (aka Dunlough Castle). I don’t know how I both typo’d a word AND got them out of order…

I built this same wall thousands of times in AoE2! Very cool, I can’t wait to see things like this in person.
