    What dangers is it supposed to be looking for? Is it military dangers or weather dangers. To me it looks like a fixated big buoy

    Its called a south cardinal beacon, the two downward pointing cones indicate that clear water lies to the south.

    Thought it was about the size of a traffic sign until I realised there was a ladder on the side and the ‘bolts’ on the base are actually mooring posts.

    Before beacons and lighthouses an experienced ship captain meant the difference between life and near certain death. This is a good reminder.
