    The colors are important to ships as they tell those navigating whether they are entering or leaving port.

    At least these are easily able to be figured out as navigational beacons. Was going into Bergen, Norway, and we were looking at the "Sailing Directions"-books that are supposed to tell us these things, and the little coastal lighttowers there all looked like doghouses with copper roof’s and a cupola with the light in the center. Impossible to figure out what they were until we saw 5-6 of them

    It’s not merely for looks. The crenelations provide moderate cover to the archers should the oil tankers prove to be hostile.
