The Higashiyama District is a stunning traditional historic Japanese neighborhood overall, the Yasaka Pagoda is probably the most stand out building in the entire historic district. In my opinion it is one of the most beautiful examples of traditional Japanese architecture. I wish the rest of Kyoto still looked like this area, most of the old buildings in the city were torn down for cheap, generic modern buildings. You’d think that even with all the buildings lost in Japanese cities from WW2, Japan would want keep a majority of the historic landscape in the cities that weren’t bombed intact, kind of like what Germany did but I guess not. Kyoto was intensely modernized like Tokyo and Osaka, despite escaping unscathed from the war. Oh well, at least Kyoto still has a small area that was well preserved so it can remind us of how gorgeous Japanese cities once were.
