The University of Al-Karaouine was a Madrasa – an Islamic place of higher learning. Europeans historically liked to draw a distinction between madrasas and universities. I’m sure the fact that it meant the list of ‘oldest universities’ was dominated by European institutions instead of Islamic ones had nothing to do with it.
