The Singer Building in 1965, Lower Manhattan, New York, just three years before its demolition. Built in 1900, it was the tallest building in the world for a short period of time at 205 meters (674 ft).
Still can’t believe that any civilization would demolish such a structure unless it posed a danger to the rest of the city.

While it was around, it was supposedly like THE NYC landmark building. It would be like tearing down the Chrysler Building or something today. And the sad part is that the new landmarks commission, formed after the destruction of Penn Station, refused to save it.

That’s awesome; so rare (for me, anyway) to see that style in a building that tall.
Also, if a billionaire philanthropist and nocturnal vigilante crime fighter lives anywhere in that city, I’m pretty sure he’d live in the triplex penthouse of that building…

such an awesome building, wish it still existed

Supposedly a brick made of pure silver was placed as the capstone when it was completed. I wonder if a construction worker found it once it was demolished and took it home, or if itβs sitting buried in some landfill.
Per Wikipedia β The U.S. Steel Building (later known as One Liberty Plaza) was built on the site, being completed in 1973.[83] One Liberty Plaza contained 37,000 square feet (3,400 m2) per floor, compared with the 4,200 square feet (390 m2) per floor in the Singer Building’s tower.β

Fun fact: up until last year, this was the tallest building ever torn down on purpose.

What do New Yorkers have against good looking buildings?
