    Interestingly, this is an exact replica of the Palais de la Légion d’honneur in Paris, hence the name :

    A 3/4 replica of the Parisian palace was built as the French Pavilion for the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition : a SF magnate liked it so much, he asked the French government a permission to build a real permanent copy, which was done in 1921, on this incredible plot overlooking the Golden Gate.
