    More info

The hotel was demolished in 1951 for surface parking in downtown Portland. The property was later turned into the Pioneer Courthouse Square, which includes some of the wrought-iron decorative fence panels from the Portland Hotel

They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot

It’s incredible to think that there were people who believed parking lots would be better use of land (and revenue) than a hotel or other uses.

For a parking lot? „Sometimes“ I have to question human intelligence.

Write a tragic story in 5 words or less:

    Demolished for a parking lot

Worth pointing out the building was deteriorating beforehand

Honestly i personally like this sub and the photos are beautiful and incredible but most of these buildings were in need of coming down. Nostalgia is great but these buildings are obsolete. Cities can not afford to waste huge spaces when revenue is needed. They’re not making anymore land.
