Clarence Saunders founded Piggly Wiggly in 1916. He famously went bankrupt during the construction of his grand mansion, now known as the Pink Palace (https://www.memphismuseums.org/sites/516/uploaded/images/mansion_tulips_pink_copy-thumb620x300.jpg)

What did they do in grocery stores before they were self serve? Someone picked out the groceries for you? Or this was literally the first “grocery store” as we know it today?

Fascinating. But why was it called Piggly Wiggly? Was it something to do with it bring a butchers place?

My grandfather and uncle used to call them Hogly Wogly.

There used to be Piggly Wiggly stores in California in the 1930’s. One was in San Diego at Park Blvd and Normal St / El Cajon Blvd. Structure is still there.

Sadly we no longer have any Piggly Wiggly’s in Memphis.

This isn’t so much lost architecture as just lost history. Because it’s not striking me as trajic loss of great architecture from this picture.

Im guessing they didn’t allow black people inside when this first opened.
