I stayed in the hotel right behind this building on a work trip about 5 years ago. I went to Detroit with super low expectations but was surprised to find a lot of beauty. Lots of incredible architecture and design still left, but you can see and feel how much has been lost.

These kind of buildings would have a monumental status in my country. So you can’t demolish or change it ‘s appearance by law, but will receive public taxmoney for maintainance.

I would walk by the building every day to get to work. I actually watched it get torn down.

The biggest crime here is that it was replaced by 12 parking spaces. No building is worth 12 parking spaces. For fucks sake Detroit, parking garages are a thing, and a far more effective use of space for parking

Detroit absolutely needs to get a handle on the obsession with more parking. Downtown alone has something like over 40% of space allocated for parking. A stupid high number which is crippling the ability for the city to invest in its people.
