Abstract: The Church of the Transfiguration, known affectionately as The Little Church Around the Corner, is an Anglo-Catholic parish within The Episcopal Church founded by Rev. Dr. George Hendric Houghton in 1848. It is housed in an edifice that has grown asymmetrically throughout the years, designed in the style of early English Gothic Revival to resemble the quaint parishes of England’s countryside. Since its inception, the Church’s ministry has been focused on the poor and the marginalized, welcoming to all regardless of race, class, or background. Dr. Houghton’s own courage made the Church a refuge for African-Americans as well as actors, who were still social outcasts in the 19th Century. One particular instance with actor Joseph Jefferson birthed the Church’s nickname, beginning its sustained relationship with the theater.
