The B&O Railroad Company building, Baltimore, MD. One of the most significant losses of the Great Baltimore Fire. (1882-1904)

This is the second building I’ve posted that was lost in the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904, the first being the Sun Iron building.

It was originally supposed to be five stories when first completed, but needed two other stories which helped complete its grand look. I think two additional ones were added in 1888, but not sure on the exact timeline of that.

This seems to be it’s original design, from 1880, featuring a spire.

It stood next to the The Equitable Building, Baltimore’s oldest skyscraper. (And still stands today!)

It replaced the Baltimore Museum, which burned down ten years prior in 1872. Unfortunately, a similar fate would strike this building in 1904. It was severely damaged in the Great Fire, but did initially survive.

Sadly, it wasn’t deemed savable and was razed sometime after the fire. B&O moved their headquarters about 2 blocks away to a new building built from 1904-1906. That building is also now considered historic and is now a hotel.

Meanwhile, the site this building sat on was empty for a number of years, until the Emerson Hotel was built in 1911.. You can read my little write up and that building’s fate here.

Those awnings (?) look like they cover up most of the windows, does somebody know why that was done? Or am I misinterpreting what those are?
