The Jewish community in Szabadka (Subotica) was founded in 1775. Until 2017 the community was led by Róbert Szabados, a local Hungarian-Jew. He is now the president of the Alliance of the Serbian Jewish Communities, headquartered in Belgrade.
The community in Szabadka (Subotica) is primarily backed and sponsored by the Hungarian government through the Bethlen Gábor Fund and it’s local political ally, the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians. Contradicting the daily false allegations of leftist mainstream media about recent anti-Semitism in the Carpathian-Basin, the Synagogue was completely renovated a few years ago with a €2,000,000 ($2.200.000) donation from the christian-conservative fourth Orban government.
