The plan for the city was designed by Daniel Burnham, of Chicago fame, and featured Parisian-style boulevards and a huge park stretching from Twin Peaks to Lake Merced. After the Great Earthquake of 1906 however, the original plans were destroyed, and due to the cost of rebuilding the city, such plans were never again considered. https://sf.curbed.com/2013/1/2/10290178/daniel-burnhams-san-francisco-plan
