    And if it wasn’t enough, that cluster of surviving buildings in the bottom left got turned into a highway at some point down the line.

    This would be great with another image from the same angle that shows how it looks today.

    I was just in Rotterdam (via Amsterdam) and people there told me it’s called a “city without a heart” due to the events from the war and it’s subsequent rebuilding. The dichotomy between there and Amsterdam is fascinating. One is an old city with bridges and buildings hundreds of years old, the other is all brand new architecture. It’s an interesting look at the impacts of the war in a very different but direct way.
