As well as the tens of thousands of lives lost in the 1755 calamity, a great amount of irreplacable art and architecture was destroyed. The Ribeira Palace is just one the 85% of buildings in Lisbon which were lost- a great many of which were splendid examples of the Manueline style which was unique to 16th-century Portugal. Artworks by Titian and Reubens were swept away, as were the irreplaceable resources housed in the royal archives. This material damage was not confined to Lisbon but also extended to port cities all down the southern coast of Portugal.

It is absolutely worth picking up a copy of This Gulf of Fire if you’re interested in the natural disaster that levelled Lisbon and much of the surrounding region. It’s an event that is both fascinating and terrifying in equal measure.

Despite all of that, Lisbon is still one of my favorite cities.
