You can have highways in the city without destroying it, look at Munich, Germany they have autobahn going underneath city centre but it takes more finesse, in the USA they just took bulldozer and built bunch of viaducts, fastest way but those are the effects.

I think it was actually a lack of cars that ruined Detroit

Kind of a misleading title. Misguided federal policy and racism/redlining explain it a lot better. The Federal government made a conscious decision to move the white middle class to the new suburbs, bulldoze the black neighborhoods that lay in between the suburbs and city center and make a highway. Cars had already been in the hands of the urban middle class since the 1910’s, only difference was after WWII the federal government giving people cheap housing outside the city, and building the highway for them to get into the city.

Do you have a link to the original? Can’t read the address. It looks like there are slider bars to compare.

This is why San Francisco blocked most all of the proposed freeway rebuilding efforts after the Loma P quake. Makes it less convenient to get to some places, but I think it was the right choice after seeing how it used to look.

imo kansas city is one of the worst effected

Most of Boston’s neighborhoods are memorable, but nobody really gives a crap about what goes on in Center City or West End. Guess which ones were the most heavily redeveloped in the 20th century?
