The Temple of Mars Ultor (Avenger) was an ancient sanctuary in Ancient Rome, erected 2 BC and dedicated to the god Mars. It was founded by Emperor Augustus on the Forum of Augustus, which was created partially around it. The temple was famous and one of the most prominent in Rome during the imperial era. If still in use by the 4th-century, the temple would have been closed during the persecution of pagans in the late Roman Empire, when the Christian Emperors issued edicts prohibiting non-Christian worship. Thereafter the building was pillaged for its valuable building materials.
