Built in the 1890’s, this structure was cursed with being too small for the city of Detroit. The courthouse had been built just before Detroit’s population boomed at the turn of the century. This structure was famous for its Million Dollar Courtroom (which still exists,) an impressive space decorated in fine rare marbles from all over the world, and it’s beautiful but unreliable clocktower which could never quite keep the correct time. Despite being expanded in 1915, the city quickly outgrew the building by the 1920’s and by 1930, the federal govorment allocated funds to allow for the construction of the (architecturally impressive) present day Theodore Levin Courthouse.

It looks similar to Toronto old city hall.

Beautiful structure. The extended outward reach of the front steps seems unusual to me. I wonder if this is functional.
