    This was the gala final performance and farewell concert of April 16, 1967, at the old Metropolitan Opera House at 39th and Broadway. Conducting from the pit was Leopold Stokowski, who made an impassioned speech to the audience (as Stokowski often did on any number of subjects during his long career) to save the building.

    It was here that Enrico Caruso rose to fame and, for a time, Gustav Mahler directed the company. It seemed, at the time, that everyone in New York wanted the building saved. Everyone, but not the Metropolitan Opera. Included in terms of the sale of the property was a binding obligation that the building be demolished.
