    This is what the university’s present building looks like. The loss of the original college is sad, but at least something magnificent replaced it.

    One consolation is they took the steps from the old building and included them in the new building in the west end.

    AFAIK there were similar plans to demolish most of Oxford and Cambridge campus in the 60s. Even further than that, majority of town would be also demolished and built over with towerblocks and freeways.

    Imagine, there were people that seriously proposed and tried to lobby for it.
