I’ve been inside this one and bought a T-shirt there!
This is an art bathhouse where you can soak your body in hot water while being totally surrounded by eclectic pieces like a big stuffed elephant in the room with you. Their slogan which is on the shirt I bought says "I 💛 湯" with the kanji symbol meaning hot water/hot springs and pronounced ‘yu’ so, I love you!
Naoshima and its neighboring two islands Teshima and Inujima are absolutely stunning for anyone thinking about ever traveling to central Japan. They have been transformed into world renowned art islands with a couple major contemporary art galleries, several local abandoned homes which have had their interiors transformed by different artists, and various sculptures and pieces scattered over the islands which you can all see by renting a bike and taking ferries between the islands.
The local encomy had been shrinking for years so now with a collective of Japanese artists (spearheaded by architect Tadao Ando if I remember correctly) bringing in thousands and thousands of tourists the schools are staying open and there is still fishing and agriculture continuing. Many households are open to doing homestays for the tourists who visit and want to spend the night in traditional accommodations. And all this right smack in the middle of Japan’s inland sea between the famous garden of Okayama and the tiny but lovable city of Takamatsu.
Highly highly recommended for anyone who is ever within three hundred miles of Naoshima!
