That’s your oil money, hard at work; designed and built by the West with the West’s money, and made so that the House of Saud can bilk the richer pilgrims during their Hajj. Best part is that many historical sites, including the house of Mohammed’s Uncle, were demolished to clear land for this abomination that barely has a hint of Muslim influence to it. Even the Burj Khalifa and the Petronas Towers were built from the ground up on Islamic architecture and design.

I mean, for a city as central to a faith of over a billion people, the architecture leaves much to be desired in both extremes, both rich and poor.

Kind of reminds me of ten penny tower in FO

It looks so ugly, especially when shown amongst the tallest buildings in the world. Like, there are more or less masterpieces of architecture like Burj Khalifa, Shanghai tower, Goldin Finance tower, Central Park tower, Willis Tower, Lakhta center, Q1 and others, and then there’s this

    The Saudis have ruined mecca

This building btw, is by far the most expensive building in the world, it cost about 15 billion to construct. Number 2 on that list cost about 6 billion to construct.

I made an architectural model of this area for work in about 1997 and none of this shit was there.

Looks like religious capitalism…. huh, how about that.

The Tower Hotel in Mecca is to religious sites what the Las Vegas Excalibur Hotel and Casino is to medieval castles.

Except that, you know, Mecca is an actual religious site. And the caricatures-as-casino theme of Las Vegas kinda fits the glory of excess of that town.

Aside from comically bad taste, why does it have a clock? Is there religious symbolism in that?

Whoever was responsible for this needs to be dealt with. Mecca was so beautiful and now it’s a gaudy, Disneyesque freakshow. Absolutely ruined.
