Mark Hopkins Mansion: Built in 1878, was for a time the highest point in San Francisco. It was consequently destroyed in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1912.
It was destroyed in one of the many fires that followed the earthquake of 1906, not 1912. Currently the site of the Mark Hopkins Hotel, which opened 20 years later.

WOW! What an incredible looking structure. Can you imagine calling that stunningly magnificent residence home? All of the features seem to flow together and none of the design appears out of place. Such dignified opulence is usually reserved for royalty. Is it true that Hopkins never lived in it? I believe he died before construction was complete.
