This is a render of the aforementioned Mandarin Oriental Melbourne (aka 600 Collins Street), designed by one of my favorite firms, Zaha Hadid Architects. (Sidenote: Zaha herself passed away a few years back, and is a must-known figure for architecture lovers; really a gem.)

I’ve been following this project for a number of years, soon after it was first proposed. Seeing this photo again makes me sad, because while the project went through the approval process, and with a suspenseful wait, 2-3 months back news came back that it is pretty much dead, seemingly due to developers’ decisions and financial considerations.

It was one of my favorites projects in one of my my favorite cities, so it did string to learn. But this is the nature of these projects; you win some, you lose some.
