    It’s the only part of the original parliament building that survived a huge fire in the early 1900s, the rest of parliament was rebuilt in a more restrained style because they felt it wrong to build a huge opulent Parliament building right after ww1

    I believe it’s loosely based on Medieval English monastic kitchens, e.g. Glastonbury or Durham, as well as the more obvious chapter houses.
