Prior to World War II, Libera had been one of Mussolini’s favoured architects, one of the key figures in the rationalist movement of the time. He was greatly changed and chastened when Italy lost the war and the failures of the fascism he had once so vocally supported became evident. In the postwar years, he turned his back on the heavy, monumental style of Mussolini’s regime, experimenting more and more with lightness and unusual forms- his particular interest in hyperbolae is demonstrated here.
