Nice shot! I am from that area of Shanghai ! Some background:

    • Jing’An temple has 1800 yo. originally built by Mother of Sun Quan (King of Wu, Three Kingdom era)
    • In the photo, the old art deco cinema/theater-like building in NW to the temple, is The Paramount. Famous place in 1930 Metro Shanghai. Charlie Chaplin once performed there.
    • Wikipedia says ‘during the Cultural Revolution, the temple was converted into a plastic factory. ‘
    • My father told me he saw officials destroyed the Budda statues there during the Cultural Revolution.
    • The location of the temple is in some central business district of Shanghai. (Think of St.Patrick Cathedral on Manhattan)
    • I donated 200 RMB (~$30 USD) for the reconstruction of Ashoka Pillar (lower right on photo) during the early. 2000s. It was painted with real gold.
    • Opposite the temple (cannot see on this photo) has the oldest McDonald in Shanghai (since early 1990s). A meal there in early 90s could cost 1/10 of my family monthly income.

Kiss my ass it’s been there for 1800 years. It didn’t look anything like that in 1999 when I lived there. Total reinvention of the truth. Just like most of this shit in China.
