I stayed in one of these earlier this year in February. Amazing time. But crazy to think I went to the states just before covid really hit hard, dodged a bullet there lol

Reminds me of this famous photo of jazz musicians. My dad has a print framed in our dining room. He likes to joke that it’s our family portrait, but we’re European descent (white). But growing up listening to all those jazz giants, they felt like family for sure. All this of course is not relevant to the architecture, but it evokes memories. It’s his birthday today and I know he will be sitting underneath this photo today having made his own favorite dinner, probably Miles or Monk or Coltrane pouring in from the other room. Yea, this scene caught me feeling sentimental!

What style would this building be

One thing I dislike about American townhouses is the gigantic staircases that create disunity and separation between the street and the building, rather than having the buildings abut directly onto the street. It’s bad urbanism. Does anyone known the historical reasons behind this?

What a crime to let 257 sit boarded up like that.

I checked Google Street View and 257 is no longer boarded up.
