Abstract: Hanmaum Zen Center of New York is a branch of the Hanmaum Seon Center (HSC), based in Anyang, South Korea and founded by Daehaeng Kun Sunim in 1972. It is part of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, which is the largest Buddhist order in South Korea and was the united order of Korean Seon until 1954. It then split, amid historical-political intrigues involving President Syngman Rhee, between a celibate monk faction, which retained the name of Jogye, and a mixed celibate monk and married priest faction, which became the Taego Order. After realizing that so many laypersons were unaware of or unable to reach their own Buddha-natures, Daehaeng founded HSC for the purpose of engaging the masses, regardless of personal status or gender. This was a profound shift, as Seon masters like her had typically taught only a handful of monks and nuns. Daehaeng’s work reinvigorated interest in Buddhism and her prominence made her an effective advocate for the interests of Buddhist nuns (Bhikkhuni).
