This abandoned Irish castle was built in the 1200s by a Noman knight, Sir Thomas Fitz Anthony, and was once one of the most important in Kilkenny. Fitz Anthony at one point controlled much of the English holdings on the island. In a strange twist, the family later fell out of grace and a legend says the owner’s head was served on a platter to King Richard II. In later years it was besieged by Cromwell, and fell into decay in the 1800s after its rulers went into exile. Standing some 50 feet tall, today it is a forgotten but looming ruin at the edge of the town it once ruled over.
