Built in 1937, Greenside was a fine example of early English /r/ModernistArchitecture, by Connell, Ward and Lucas, one of the most innovative firms of the decade.
Pevsner praised the building for its ‘total design’ as opposed to a few modern ideas applied to the basic English house. The piano nobile sailed above the ground floor, and was finished with a roof terrace. The cantilevered near central stairwell dominated the front elevation and created an interesting complexity of volumes, making for an important building of great merit.
It was a Grade II listed building, but in 2003 its owner demolished it without consent. He subsequently argued that the Human Rights Act justified his action.
Make that top floor a bedroom and studio/lounge, fill that terrace with plants, and I’m a happy camper for life.

A lot of people here aren’t gonna upvote this because this sub tends to be a bit elitist towards non-modern architecture, but this just seems like an adorable little modern house. Thanks for sharing

I’m not really fond of the facade but I’m a big believer in “I live inside the house, not outside” – and I keep that in mind every time we move, so as not to allow myself to be swayed by whether or not the outdoor appearance is to my liking. I would have liked to see interior pics of this – I’ll bet it’s pretty neat on the inside

Nah, i’ve worked in heritage before, often these places are a lot more than meets the eye when you’re guided through them and have their features pointed out to you. I wouldn’t mind living in a place with such a huge roof to be honest.
