Synagogue of Luboml was one of the several unique fortress-synagogues in Galicia (UkrainePoland), which was used by the predominantly Jewish town community as a central defensive structure in case of enemy attack. Built more than 500 years ago, it was often the only building that stood in the town after many sieges and raids. It did not survive the Holocaust however, as almost entire population of Luboml (8000 people, 90% Jewish) was annihilated in October of 1942.

There are still several extant fortress-synagogues in Ukraine and Poland, many in a sad state. Synagogue of Sataniv and Husyatun Synagogue are just some examples.

My family emigrated from Luboml. The New York Public Library has a PDF copy of the Luboml Memorial Book:

At least in the US, holocaust education tends to focus on the storied of Jews in Western and Central Europe. I don’t think many people grasp how intense the persecution of Jews in Eastern Europe was.
