Question to any high rise architects .. WHY was so much effort placed on intricate designs of almost certainly unseeable edifices?! There are remarkable designs on early 20th century buildings that 99.9999% of NYers never see. What was the motivation or aspiration?

Hell of a lot better than the soulless monoliths and boxes that are typically built anymore.
"Here is large box. Is good. Made of concrete and steel. Many shelves will fit in here, many customers. Is cheap and effective."
Bah. A little style goes a long way, and all the efficiency in the world is worth nothing if it costs us our souls. (Not in the metaphysical sense, but the philosophical. Without a sense of art, we’re just machines made of meat.)
