Wow, never seen anything like it. I guess a modern day version would be a gondola.

Great additional info on [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre-Dame_de_la_Garde#Funicular). It was run by filling a water tank in the upper wagon – unfortunately it took 10 minutes to fill it and it only took 2 minutes to travel from top to bottom …

You can still see the remains of the railway in the [cliff](https://www.google.com/maps/@43.2865545,5.3727364,71a,35y,204.44h,47.45t/data=!3m1!1e3) on Google maps.

Yea Pittsburgh has two about mile and half apart that goes up to mount Washington. The Monongahela incline wich is metal and newer. Duquesne incline is older and made out of wood. Really creeks when your on it. I grew up in mount Washington and ride the inclines daily to school and back and wherever else I needed to go as a kid.

They should have kept the structures whilst letting the track be removed.
