Looks like a set of Ayleid Ruins from Oblivion!

It’s funny how much you take places like this for granted when you grow up with them. My first reaction to this picture was: “Oh, I’ve had a picnic there.”

One of the few posts on this sub that doesn’t enrage me. There’s still so much of it left and it’s eerily beautiful.

Why were the monasteries dissolved? Was it related to Church of England?

    Edit: Yep – Henry VIII (28 June 1491 – 28 January 1547)

Fucking Henry. It’s pretty 500 years later, but it didn’t have to be this way.

It’s ‘largely destroyed’ in that it’s missing a roof, glass, and all its internal fixtures and fittings, but compared to the other dissolved English monasteries it’s among the most complete. It’s rare for a majority of the walls to survive to almost their full height.
