Melbourne’s Federal Coffee Palace must be one of the greatest Victorian (era and state FWIW) losses. It’s interior was amazing, and the 2 buildings to replace it utterly devoid of splendour.

These days in Toronto, the facade would have been left standing and a skyscraper built from within. This is ok but to enforce it for all buildings degrades the quality of the new architect where it meets the ground and the pedestrian.
Yes, this is nice… but modernity has a place too, in those cities such as Toronto.
