Named after the 9th Earl De La Warr, who was the driving force in its creation, the Pavilion was designed by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff and opened in 1935. Originally conceived as a ‘People’s Palace’, this experiment is the prototype for the modern cultural centre.

The Pavilion was constructed out of concrete and steel, with large glass windows, cantilevered balconies, clean lines and terrazzo floors. The interior design was just as cutting edge , with light cream and pastel walls, moulded plywood chairs designed by Alvar Aalto and a mural by artist Edward Wadsworth commissioned for the restaurant. The original model, currently exhibited at Bexhill Museum, included a swimming pool with a pier jutting out to sea and covered walkways from promenade to Pavilion. In 2005, after an extensive restoration, the De La Warr Pavilion reopened as a contemporary arts centre, encompassing one of the largest galleries on the south coast of England.
