What good reason could the owner possibly have had to rather pay for demolition instead of selling? it boggles my mind…

Wow. Super sad. Reminds me of the old Millionaires Row in Cleveland. Most of those beautiful old mansions never lasted more than a generation or two because they decided to tear them down so they couldn’t be used for public housing.

Why was it legal to demolish it?

Title is kind of misleading. From reading the article OP posted it seems like the owner wanted to destroy it, locals did a petition to save it, but the municipality didn’t have the logistics in place to maintain it. He didn’t destroy it just because because the city wanted it.
From the article:
“Locals tried to save the 19th century, Neo-Gothic Miranda from demolition last year with a 5,000 signature petition— but the logistics of keeping such a place alive and kicking are tricky. And expensive. We just don’t live in an era conducive to the upkeep of feudal-y estates”
