I live a few kilometers away from the Haut-Koenigsbourg, my town can be seen from up there.
Like most of the dozens of castles in the area, this castle used to be a ruin. It was damaged heavily during the Thirty Years’ War, destroyed by a fire soon after and abandoned. However, it was given as a present to the German emperor Wilhelm II who made it his pet project and decided to have it rebuilt at the very beginning of the 20th century.

I visited this castle with my husband during our honeymoon last January. It was beautiful in midwinter, empty and blanketed with snow.
