I went to France with my mom and high school French teacher the summer after my freshman year in university. My French teacher was a missionary kid and was starting a private tour business. She found this office on the Champs-Élyésses that sold same day tickets to fine arts events.

That’s how we got to see a candlelit violin concert in La Pettit Chapelle. It was breathtaking. The candle light just glistened off the warm gold and the rich pigments of the painted ceiling and columns. It was June, and the sunset made the stained glass look like it was molten precious stones. I also saw multiple chateaus, cathedrals, and churches in France and England, but Saint La Chappelle is by far the most gorgeous.

The building that was allowed to be built (can’t remember when they said it was built, but also old) so close to it that it blocks light through the stain glass is an unforgivable sin.

I always have this building in my personal memory banks as a reminder that "Gothic" Architecture is not in any way the dark, brooding thing it’s often made out to be.
