    As much of the precious artistic heritage in Spain, this castle was destroyed by the French during the napoleonic retreat, and what we can see today is a modern reconstruction from the era of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. Some things they destroyed for tactical reasons, as most of our castles, and some for pure pleasure, as libraries, stained glasses, tombs…

    I really like how this castle looks like it was built coming out of the mountain/rock rather than just being built on top of it.

    Took me a minute to appreciate the slopes on the walls on a strategic level. But now I see that forces assailants further out which allows defenders to aim down at them. Extra stone probably makes tunneling or sapping more difficult as well.
